Leap Motion has released a new interface that allows users to interact with their Mac or PC much like the XBox Kinect. The sensor is so sensitive, that it is 200 times more accurate than the Kinect, and can distinguish all ten of your fingers and track movements to a 1/100 of an millimeter!
Leap has compared this to “Day one of the mouse. Except, no one needs an instruction manual for their hands.” One amazing aspect of this technology is that it can be used with any touch application. There is backwards compatibility with legacy touch applications. Leap can recognize gestures in three dimensions. In addition to pinching and swiping, there’s pushing, pulling, grabbing, shaking, etc. along with the ability do do more than one of those simultaneously.
A small number of development kits have been sent to Alpha testers. Consumers who want to get their hands on this device will need to wait until all the kinks are ironed out. Leap Motion is priced at a reasonable $70 and pre-orders will likely begin shipping in December or January.
